I am happy that the refrigerator we ordered last week has arrived on time. But it is a great pity that we find there is something wrong with the refrigeration facilities.

After we used it for several days. we found that food stored in the refrigerating compartment turned bad quickly. When we finally decided to take the temperature in it, we were surprised to find it was around 15℃, far from the standard temperture range from 0℃ to 9℃.

Prices determine how resources are to be used. They are also the means by which products and services that are in limited sup* are rationed among buyers. The price system of the United States is a complex network composed of the prices of all the products bought and sold in the economy as well as those of a myriad of services, including labor, professional, transportation, and public-utility services. The interrelationships of all these prices make up the"system" of prices. The price of any particular product or service is linked to a broad, complicated system of prices in which everything seems to depend more or less upon everything else.

If one were to ask a group of randomly selected individuals to define "price", many would re* that price is an amount of money paid by the buyer to the seller of a product or service or, in other words, that price is the money value of a product or service as agreed upon in a market transaction. This definition is, of course, valid as far as it goes. For a complete understanding of a price in any particular transaction, much more than the amount of money involved must be known. Both the buyer and the seller should be familiar with not only the money amount, but with the amount and quality of the product or service to be exchanged, the time and place at which the exchange will take place and payment will be made, the form of money to be used, the credit terms and discounts that ap* to the transaction, guarantees on the product or service, delivery terms, return privileges, and other factors. In other words, both buyer and seller should be fully aware of all the factors that comprise the total "package" being exchanged for the asked-for amount of money in order that they may evaluate a given price.

Jogging has become the most popular individual sport in America. Many theories, even some mystical ones, have been advanced to explain the popularity of jogging. The plain truth is that jogging is a cheap, quick and efficient way to maintain physical fitness.

The most useful sort of exercise is exercise that develops the heart, lungs, and circulatory systems. If these systems are fit, the body is ready for almost any sport and for almost any sudden demand made by work or emergencies. One can train more specifically, as by developing strength for weight lifting or the ability to run straight ahead for short distances with great power s in football, but running trains your heart and lungs to deliver oxygen more efficiently to all parts of your body. It is worth noting that this sort of exercise is the only kind that can reduce heart disease, the number one cause of death in America.

Only one sort of equipment is needed a good pair of shoes. Physicians advise beginning joggers not to run in a tennis or gym shoe. Many design advances have been made in only the last several years that make an excellent running shoe in dispensable if a runner wishes to develop as quickly as possible, with as little chance of injury as possible. A good running shoe will have a soft pad for absorbing shock, as well as a slightly built-up heel and a full heelcup that will give the knee and ankle more stability. A wise investment in good shoes will prevent bilisters and the foot, ankle and knee injures and will also enable the wearer to run on paved or soft surfaces.

Upon reaching an appropriate age (usually between 18 and 21 years), children are encouraged, but not forced, to “leave the nest” and begin an independent life. After children leave home they often find social relationship and financial support outside the family. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children, nor do children usually ask permission of their parents to get married, Romantic love is most often the basis for marriage in the United States; young *s meet their future spouses through other friends, at jobs, and in organizations and religious institutions, Although children choose their own spouses, they still hope their parents will approve of their choices.

In many families, parents feel that children should make major life decisions by themselves. A parent may try to influence a child to follow a particular profession but the child is free to choose another career. Sometimes children do precisely the opposite of what their parents wish in order to assert their independence. A son may deliberately decide not to go into his father’s business because of a fear that he will lose his autonomy in his father’s workplace. This independence from parents is not an indication that parents and children do not love each other. Strong love between parents and children is universal and this is no exception in the American family Coexisting with such love in the American family are cultural values of self – reliance and independence.

A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm-two entirely different movements.

Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear.

This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority.

Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century.

Every weekday morning I take the 8:30 bus to go to my job. I know by sight several people who also fide that bus. Some of the girls work as maids. They get off at each stop in ones, twos or threes.

But at one corner something wonderful happens. Before the bus stops, a little dog races out of the nearest house. He doesn"t look at two of the maids who get off. But for the third he has a joyful "Hello!". From head to tail his little body wags his happiness. Everyone on the bus watches until the maid and the dog go into the house.

One day not long ago the maid wasn"t on the bus. I wondered if the dog would be waiting for her. Sure enough, he was!

He stood at the back door of the bus for a minute. I could see his joyful welcome turning into fearful worry. Where was she?

The driver closed the back door. The dog raced to the front door. It, too, shut in his face.

Everyone on the bus felt sad. Poor little pup! He looked so unhappy, standing there!

The driver couldn"t stand it. He opened the door and looked down at the dog. "She didn"t come today," he said, in a loud, kind voice.

A man in a front seat leaned forward. "Maybe she will come tomorrow," he called.

The dog wagged his tail as if to say "thank you." He watched the bus as we pulled away. Then he turned to trot home ── alone.

The next day everyone on the bus was happy to see the maid back again. Yes, the dog was waiting for her.

The welcome he gave her was even warmer and more delighted than usual. We all smiled at one another. How bright and good the morning suddenly seemed to us!

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay based on the picture below. You should comment on the role of mobile phone in people"s communication. You are required to write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

The Role of Mobile Phone in People"s Communication

The popularity of smartphones has exerted great influence on the way people communicate, so much so that an increasing number of individuals contend that face-to-face communication is being replaced by texts and images on the mobile phone.

There are more than one angle to consider this phenomenon. On one hand, it is pleasantly acknowledged that smartphones shorten the distance between families and friends. Even people from different sides of the globe can share pictures, feelings and thoughts through various types of apps on the phone, thus building a long-distance connection. On the other hand, as the picture warns us, too much smartphone addiction interferes with people"s real-life communication. Statistics show that over 70 percent of face-to-face communication consists of facial expressions and body language, which is why people should stay away from mobile phones when they have the chance to actually talk and communicate with others.

In a word, mobile phones act as an appropriate platform where people can always stay in tough however long the distance is, but a wise man should know when to put down his phone.

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radio, televisions, and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope about in flickering candlelight, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them, and food spoils in silent refrigerators.Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists are discovering more and more that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity.

All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out pulses of record; they form an electrocardiogram, which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in an electroencephalogram. The electric currents generated by most living cells are extremely small —— often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized as electrical generators that they do not work as muscle cells at all. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing.

The electric eel is an amazing storage battery. It can send a jolt of as much as eight hundred volts of electricity through the water in which it lives. (An electric house current is only one hundred twenty volts.) As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel"s body are specialized for generating electricity, and the strength of the shock it can deliver corresponds roughly to the length of its body.

Although Father’s Day may be celebrated at different times of the year in different parts of the world, I think the importance of the day remains the same. It is a day to show our love and respect for our fathers.

As a young girl, I remember the excitement I felt whenever I had a chance to spend time with my father on the farm. Although he was busy doing his work, being with him was what mattered most to me. I can remember my father giving orders to the dogs as they corralled1 the sheep. I held his strong hands as we crossed the yard to close the gate behind the last sheep.

It was amazing to see that my dad wrestled sheep after sheep to get them into just the right position for shearing2. I remember the sweat pouring down from his head when he worked hard, shearing one sheep after another, pausing now and then to have a drink of water and give me a smile.

Later we would go back to the house in our old car. I sat in the front seat, feeling like a queen, with my dad next to me and the dogs in the back.

My father’s memory of the same day may be quite different, but no matter which story you hear, it all comes down to one thing: It doesn’t matter who my father was; it * who I remember him to be.

  Notes:

  1. corral v.

  2. shear v.

Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question.

  1. Which word below helps you conclude that the passage contains opinions?

  A. Pour. B. Amazing.

  C. Give. D. Pause.

  2. _____ is a fact.

  A. "Although Father’s Day may be celebrated at different times of the year, the importance of the day remains the same."

  B. "It doesn’t matter who my father was; it * who I remember him to be."

  C. "Father and I crossed the yard hand in hand to close the gate."

  D. "It was amazing to see my dad wrestled sheep after sheep to get them into the right position for shearing."

Recently, my younger brother passed away at the age of 38. I cleaned his things up and gave everything that could be used to those who needed them.

I came across a Father’s Day card I had given nearly 35 years ago, and the thought of it brought a tear to my eyes and gave me an idea.

When I was growing up, I was told to make hand-made cards for our parents at school. It was a pleasant experience but a little uncomfortable for me because only my mom was left.

Anyway, we created Happy Father’s Day cards to bring home. I thought that my mom played both roles in our home, so on the front of the card, where it read Happy Father’s Day, I added the word "mom" to the text and gave it to her. Mom was very happy!

My younger brother had gotten many of Mom’s things when she moved to Florida. He had remembered that Mom loved the card, and he did not want to lose it. It remained with him until his death.

This card gave me the idea for creating a line of gifts for children seeking a similar gift, as I have never found a similar product yet. The website called Happy Father’s Day, Mom was created with some of the profits going to Mom to support her retirement. Who would have thought it could go this far? I am not sure how many more years Mom will be with us, but I know I will always have the memory of the card that read "Happy Father’s Day, Mom".

  Note:

  retirement n.退休

Dan: That’s a duck? It looks like a Frisbee.
